Meet Kevin

My fascination with photography began in 1985 when I developed my first roll of black-and-white film in a fifth grade photography class. It was magic to see images of my friends from the previous week appear before my eyes. My high school also had access to photography where I took electives in Photography and Advanced Photography. These experiences led me down the path of journalism as my mom asked “how can you make a living in photography?” I was actually thinking National Geographic because I loved watching nature shows.

My college years at Ohio University were packed with studying the greats of photography, mastering the craft, and always thinking about how to tell the story. I was fortunate to have great teachers at Scripps Howard School of Journalism and the School of Visual Communications who believed in my potential. I studied abroad in Edinburgh, Scotland entering my Junior year, which only heightened my love for people and photography. After two newspaper internships while in school and graduating with honors with a BSJ, I worked as a staff photographer for newspapers for nearly 13 years with 9.5 years spent at The Durham Herald-Sun.

Since 2008, I have been running a contract photography business using my photojournalism background to bring a lifetime of photography to my clients. I consider teaching others about photography crucial as this keeps me sharp and helps show the importance of documenting our world. My passion for photography and gratefulness for the time others have invested in training me have led to the Discovering Oak Island: Camera-in-Hand project.  I consider the book’s readers as clients and hope that it lifts everyone’s creative enjoyment of photography.

Meet Linda

Linda graduated from University of Wisconsin and was certified to teach English in secondary schools.  She took off most of two decades to raise Kevin and his two brothers.  The next 20 years she spent working for the National Park Service as a Program Analyst with duties that included writing for the Northeast Region website, the coordination and writing of the annual accomplishments of the National Park Service’s park and non-park programs, and the development of materials used for conference presentations and conference workshop written materials. Linda is now retired on Oak Island free to experience its natural and human draws which were essential to developing the text of the book.
